Abstract
Background: Burn is considered one major type of injury and a public health problem. Burn injuries account for approximately 2,65,000 deaths annually throughout the world. Household burn injury is one of the common categories of burn injury. The burden of household burn exists throughout the world however it is not uniformly distributed. According to The World Health Organization (WHO) report, in India alone, over 1 million people are moderately or severely burned every year. The issue of burn injuries in South Asia is a concerning issue and is an important epidemiological problem that needs to be explored and reported.
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to estimate the current burden, types, and severity of unintentional household burn injuries, to identify the associated factors of unintentional household burn injuries and to review the existing intervention or policies for prevention and control of unintentional household burn injuries.
Methodology: This systematic review has included studies from the year 2000 to 2020 including all the relevant published information as described in the inclusion criteria.
Results: Out of the 713 abstracts retrieved, 31 articles were selected for the final review. The area of research after reviewing the literature does not give us an optimistic picture and seems to be under-researched as well since there are no studies providing data in the South Asian countries of Maldives and Bhutan. The findings of the study revealed that in South Asian region the low socio-economic status, poor prevention and treatment policies for burden of burn injuries are the predominant factors and that the associated risk factors play a role in the unintentional burn injury incidents with vi lack of education and awareness effecting mainly women and children to have accidents at households suffering from burn injuries, morbidity and mortality.
Conclusion: This study describes the unintentional burn injuries and their associated factors which bring about morbidity and mortality mostly among women and children, so the burn injuries are a cause of concern and an important public health issue. With the lack of financial resources and adequate policies for burn care prevention and treatment in South Asian countries, it is essential to take measures for reducing the number of burn injuries in these countries.
