Abstract
Background: The vulnerable populations in society face great disparities. They face segregation from the general population and subjected to discrimination and stigmatization based on their race, disability, religion, or gender identity. Because of this, their Quality of life is affected. One of these vulnerable population is Transgender Women who face violence, harassment and stigmatization in society based on their appearance and gender orientation.
Purpose: The study aimed to explore and understand, the individual, social and psychological factors that affect health-related quality of life of transgender women, and their influence on the daily lives of these individuals.
Method: The Study used a qualitative exploratory study design. For data analysis thematic analysis with a deductive approach was used which generated different codes based on the responses received from the Focus Group discussion and Key informant Interviews. Interview guide was developed consisting of open ended questions using certain themes that were part of conceptual Framework. These themes generated different codes based on the responses received from the participants and thus were analyzed accordingly. The participants for the focus group discussion comprised of individuals from this population whereas the Key Informant included those transgender women who are working at different authoritative positions and involved in advocacy of trans rights and well-being of this community.
Findings: Based on the themes such as diet & physical activity, health seeking behaviours, substance use, healthcare access & discrimination, safety & social support, stress & depression, anxiety and fear findings showed that transgender women’s life is greatly affected in terms of individual, social & psychological factors. This included lack of access to basic healthcare services, increase uptake of rugs due to various reasons, future uncertainties, fear of getting killed lack of social support and safety at public places. It becomes difficult for transgender women to live and enjoy life with free mind due to the fear of discriminatory attitudes and behaviours towards this community.
Conclusion: These societal behaviors limit normal functioning of the transgender community and hence affecting their overall health related Quality of life.
