Abstract

Licensure and certification are the primary regulatory tools for ensuring that individual healthcare workers are competent to enter practice and remain in it. Some versions of these regulatory processes are present in most countries, but there is considerable variability among them. Nonetheless they all face similar issues, so this presentation will explore 1) who cares about it licensure and certification, 2) some of the models for it, 3) the educational effects, and 4) the research evidence indicating that these regulatory processes influence the quality of care provided to the community.
