Abstract

Introduction: A curriculum map is an educational tool that tells you what has been taught (academic content), how it has been taught (the teaching resources and opportunities), when it is being taught (the timetable), and also shows the assessment plan if the teaching has successfully occurred1. Like a road map to knowledge, a curriculum map makes a curriculum more transparent to all stakeholders and clarifies the relationships and links between various components of curriculum1. In health education, curriculum mapping has been used to help teach evidence based medicine, geriatrics, clinical nutrition, and computer-based virtual medical courses.

In this study our objective is to develop a curriculum map for ACLS, which is a visual representation of different components of curriculum so that the relationships and connections are easily seen1,2. This map is a functional tool representing operational processes behind what is happening in the program and it plays an effective role for linking different aspects of our ACLS curriculum 2.Curriculum mapping is not simply a translation of the timetable and syllabus into a flow chart, it is a method of collecting data about what is actually happening including the assessment plan2,4,6,7.

Methods: ACLS was conducted on May 2012 with 30 participants and 6 ACLS instructors, in our study we have included all 6 ACLS instructors and instructed them to do the curriculum mapping for ACLS . With special emphasis on key components of curriculum mapping such as teaching resources, teaching opportunities, assessment and feedback. Out of 6 maps 4 were selected on the basis of accuracy and operationalisation. In this qualitative research we have chosen a best curriculum map to be included as figure 1.

Results: Authors no: 1 and 4 evaluated maps presented by the instructors and best curriculum map for ACLS program was selected. Some of the observations of this map are as follows .The students and ACLS Program appears to be at the center of the program and the learning opportunities , learning outcomes, assessment, evaluation, staff, resources and timetable seem to radiate from the central focus of the learner. The students are clearly labeled as the core of the program and other elements branch out from the center are further broken down into various components.

Assessment component is divided into summative and formative assessment. Feedback/evaluation are also illustrated in details in figure 1.

Conclusion: For further advancement of medical education, its practice should be well informed to the all stakeholders especially faculty involved. Curriculum mapping an effective way for visual representation of curriculum in curriculum planning and implementation phase. The Curriculum Map of ACLS presented in this study may be applicable to the other institution in their educational programs and would better option to illustrate its key components and its assessment plan.
