Abstract

Background: Dementia is one of the major disabiling disease among South Asian population associated with many other problems. The medical community all around the world are aware of the fact that as the population ages, more and more people will suffer from dementia hence the purpose of this research is to determine the frequency of dementia in geriatrics in the multi care centres of Karachi.

Objectives: 1. To determine the frequency of dementia in elderly population of karachi at multi care centres of Karachi. 2. To identify the socio-demographic factors responsible for development of dementia.

Methods: The study was comparitive cross sectional survey. The participants were selected on the basis of non probabilty convenient sampling, the age ranging between 60 and 95 years and were not bed ridden. All those patients with severe health problems were not included. Dementia was assessed by using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Sample size of 323 was calculated by using th RAO soft formula. The data was entered on Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16 and analyzed.

Results: 327 patients were included in the study .Out of 327, 5 patients (1.5%) are in severe dementia, 113 patients (34.6%) are in moderate dementia, 112 patients (34.3 %) are in mild dementia and 96 (29.4 %) are normal.Females have a significantly higher frequency of dementia than males and so does married

Conclusion: Based on our results we came to the conclusion that dementia is associated with gender and what we observed about it was more common in females as compare to males but a few types are common in male.Dementia is associated with age. Those people who were married or widowed were more linked with dementia as compare to bachelors or singles
