Start Date

Abstract

The importance of humanities and social sciences (HASS) in the development of empathetic and effective health professionals has been documented in the literature. Humanities provide insight into the human condition and suffering and stress the responsibility to the other, while developing and nurturing skills of observation, analysis, empathy and self-reflection, which are essential for humane care. Social sciences help develop an understanding of how culture interacts with the individual experience of illness and the way medicine and nursing is practiced.

The incorporation of HASS into health professions curricula is therefore, much needed. This workshop is divided into two parts; the first uses a literature based approach to justify the importance of humanities in health professions education and the second offers an opportunity for the participants to design a teaching/leaning session/course incorporating humanities.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • Identify the relevance of humanities and social sciences in health professions education.
  • Identify possible pathways of integrating humanities and social sciences in health professions education.
